Frequently asked questions

Privacy & security

Is my data safe with 5kVIZ?

Absolutely! 5kVIZ prioritizes your privacy with a local-first approach:

  • No data collection: We never store, collect, or transmit your personal parkrun information
  • Client-side processing: All analytics are generated locally in your browser
  • No databases: We don't maintain any databases of user information
  • Minimal permissions: 5kVIZ only requests access to parkrun domains
  • Open approach: We're transparent about our data handling practices

Your parkrun data stays private and secure, processed only on your device.

Are you affiliated with parkrun?

No, 5kVIZ is not affiliated with parkrun. We're independent parkrunners who love the community and want to enhance the experience.

We parkrun - We're supporting, not competing:

  • parkrun focuses on their core mission of free, weekly 5K events
  • 5kVIZ provides extended data analytics and visualisations
  • We augment rather than replace the official parkrun experience
  • We respect parkrun's inclusive, community-driven values

Think of us as enthusiastic fans building tools for fellow enthusiasts!

What permissions does 5kVIZ need?

5kVIZ uses minimal permissions necessary to function:

  • Access to parkrun: To read and enhance your results pages
  • Storage: To save your preferences and settings locally
  • Downloads: So you can save your shareable graphics and export your results as a CSV
  • No network requests: We don't make external API calls or send data anywhere

These permissions are standard for browser extensions that enhance specific websites.

5kVIZ currently supports Google Chrome only.

We'll announce any new browser support on our social channels.

I installed 5kVIZ but don't see anything. What's wrong?

If 5kVIZ isn't appearing, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check you're on a page 5kVIZ recognises: 5kVIZ works on your results page, on any event's results page, and on any event's history page. It works on all 20 parkrun country sites, not just the UK one.
  2. Refresh the page: Sometimes a simple refresh helps
  3. Check the extension is enabled: Look for the 5kVIZ icon in your browser's extension toolbar

Using features

How do I create shareables for social media?

Creating beautiful shareables is easy with 5kVIZ:

  1. Sign in: Make sure you've signed in to your parkrun account. The share button is only available when you've signed in.
  2. Visit your parkrun results: Navigate to your athlete results page
3. Look for the Share section in 5kVIZ: 5kVIZ adds sharing options to your results
  4. Choose your graphic: There are six — Attendance, Performance and Combined are always available, and Milestone, Personal best and Alphabet completion appear when your most recent run earned one.
  5. Download or share: Save the image and share it to social media

Shareables are automatically sized for Instagram, Facebook, and X

How does challenge tracking work?

5kVIZ automatically tracks popular parkrun challenges:

Alphabet Challenge:

  • Run events starting with each letter A-Z
  • Visual grid shows completed letters
  • Progress tracking

Calendar Challenge:

  • Run on every date of the year
  • Calendar view shows completed dates

Days of Week:

  • Track runs across all days of the week
  • Special recognition for non-Saturday runs

Bingo: Two grids that fill in as you run. Stopwatch bingo tracks the seconds digits of your finish times — all 60 of them, from :00 to :59. Position bingo tracks the last two digits of your finishing position, 00 to 99. Both show your best streak, your longest drought and how close you are to a full house.

Does 5kVIZ work on event results pages?

Yes — and it needs no setup. Open any event's results page and click View event stats. You'll get the whole morning at a glance: total finishers, average and median times, and the combined parkrun history of everyone who stood on the start line. There's a podium for every single age group, an interactive breakdown of how the field spread out by finish time or age grading, a count of the personal bests and first-timers, and a look at which milestone and running clubs turned out in numbers.

What does 5kVIZ show for an event's history?

On an event's history page, click View event history for every running of that event in one place. Watch the course record fall and see how long each one stood, track attendance and volunteer numbers across the years, and mark the first time attendance broke 200, 300 or 400. There's a first finisher hall of fame, and a "Within reach…?" panel that finds your event's most beatable winning time. You can narrow every chart to a single year for an instant year in review.

Is 5kVIZ free?

Yes, entirely. Every feature is free, there's no paid tier, and there's nothing to sign up for. 5kVIZ has no account system and no backend — it reads the page you're already looking at and does the arithmetic in your browser.
